Jim Butcher
Firebird is pleased to add the
urban fantasy of Jim Butcher
to our catalog. As a rule we
do not carry much fiction
beyond Mercedes Lackey, (so
many books, so little space)
but every once in a while a
special series comes out that
we just have to include. Jim
Butcher has created a complex,
multi-layered fantasy world
complete with a film noir
style detective.
Harry Dresden of the Dresden
files is the only wizard
listed in the Chicago yellow
pages, with a specialty of
finding lost items, no love
spells.
Thinking of Harry as the love
child of Sam Spade and Diana
Tregard will set the stage for
the Dresden File novels. Jim
Butcher blends classic
fantasy-Winter and Summer
Queens of Fairy, hell
hounds-four footed and two,
zombies, necromancers, evil
wizards, good wizards with bad
attitudes, brownies, pixies,
werewolves, FBI werewolves,
shape changers, Knights of the
Cross-yes, that cross, Coin
bearers, yes those coins, a
priest willing to provide a 50
gallon barrel of holy water
with no questions asked,
vampires, good, bad and very
ugly, vampire hunters, porn
star vampires, Chicago
mobsters with if not a heart
of gold, a soft spot, and did
I mention Valkyries, trolls
and beer?
Harry shares his home with
Mister a 30 lb cat, Mouse, a
mostly Tibetian Mastiff dog,
Bob the skull--think of an
animated google search engine
that likes romance novels, and
editorializes-a lot.
The Dresden Files was a short
lived TV series that did nice
job of capturing the feel of
the books. So if you caught
an episode or two, check out
the original books.
Best read in publication order.
