Creating a cavalry horse

horsecav01.jpg - 7545 Bytes Cavalry horses are a type rather than a specific breed of horse. They come in all colors, sizes, and types.

The two pictures are of American Civil War era cavalry horses.

Material Required

The basic steps that follow can be used on any of the large hollows plastic horses manufactured by Mattel, Disney, Formative or Marx. These are all made out of a hard plastic like styrene or a related plastic. These will not work on the cellulose acetate used to create Breyer & Stone horses.

Materials Needed:
Model horse
Spray Primer, black, white & brown
Spray Paint, black, white & brown
Bondo (optional)
Epoxy putty
Sandpaper
Black model paint like Testors
Paint thinner
Black or dark brown hair from a wig
If you have trouble finding materials Firebird has used model horses and expoxy putty for sale.

This project is starts with a old battered Khan model. Khan is from the Disney horse mold, and comes in several versions. This one has hair mane, a solid tail which moves when the purple stirrups are rotated.

Here's Khan model straight from Goodwill. This model has seams that gap, a distressed mane, and the bonus of purple magic marker stockings and face markings.
