Step 7: Final details

Add the spots. The paint used is standard black Testor model paint. The hooves were also painted with stripes at the same time.
For a final finish on the face, around the eyes and the stripped hooves, dilute a drop of black model paint in paint thinner--or whatever is on hand to clean the brush. The diluted paint should be a very light gray.

Use this diluted paint on a relatively dry brush (wipe most of the paint off the brush so that it doesn't drip) and darken the areas around the nose, eyes and inside of the ears. Also paint vertical stripes on the hooves.

If the horse has been turned into a stallion, darken the skin around the genitals if the horse has a dark underside, leave pink if the underside is white. These are areas on a dark coated horse where the dark skin shows through the thin hair. Add a few very small spots around the genitals. Appaloosa's have freckles there and around the eyes and lips.

Photos of appaloosa eyes showing mottled skin around the eyes, and the white sclera.

Among other breed characteristics, Appaloosa's have a white colored inner eyelid, rather than the dark inner eyelid, or sclera that most other horses have. This give them a very human looking eye. Paint the entire surface of the eye white or just slightly off white. Use a very small brush for this job.

On some appaloosa coats the black spots are surrounded by a "halo", a ring where the underlying skin is black, but the hair is white. To create this effect go back with the very dilute black paint, and add a small ring around the large spots.

After all the detailing has been done, finish the model by sealing everything with clear acrylic spray sealer. Sealers come in three grades, Glossy, Satin, and Matte. If a matte finish is desired, spray the entire model, then go back and touch up the eyes, nostrils and hooves with gloss finish. All of the sealers will work, it just depends on what final effect you want for your model. dallas065.jpg - 26496 Bytes
