Customizing 1/6 Scale Horse

Step 7: Final Details

Shade the dark markings on the head of the horse with dilute black paint. The diluted black paint should be very light gray, just the smallest drop of black paint in painter thinner. Leave the white/pink areas alone. The shading should be around the nose, inside the ears and around genital area if the horse had dark markings in any of those places. On a regular solid color horse the dark skin will show through in places where the hair is very thin.

Paint the entire sphere of the eye slightly off white. Add just a small touch of flesh color paint to white for this color.
After this has dryed, with a very fine brush, paint a oval area on the eye sphere dark brown, or blue. This example is blue so that it will be easier to see the details.
Let this dry.

Once the entire horse has been treated with the final coat of sealer, go back and paint the entire eye with something glossy.

Halo markings, are areas on the horse where white hair grows over dark skin.

Here, the brown markings were shadowed with a dilute solution of light brown paint. The dilute paint is just a drop or two of paint in thinner. This creates a wash that can be used to shadow the dark patches on the horse.

Spray the entire horse with acrylic sealer. There are three types, gloss, satin, and matte, and range from glossy to flat. Several thin coats are better than one thick coat. Make sure that the entire surface of the horse is covered including the underside, and bottom of the hooves. Extra coats on the back, and around the belly of the horse where the saddle will sit should help prevent the paint rubbing off over time.
