CD: Sons of Somerled Steve McDonald Every once in a while an album comes along that is so good that you want to grab people by the lapels and say you have to buy this album. Sons of Somerled is by New Zealand musician Steve McDonald, and is a concept album that follows the early heroes of Scotland. Starting in the 12th century with the warrior-king Somerled who expelled the Vikings from Southwest Scotland, the songs concentrate on the exploits of the Clan Macdonald. Musically Steve McDonald has a pleasant rough baritone voice, the instrumentation is well done and appropriately features bagpipes & bodhrans. With the exception of the Scottish standards, Wild Mountain Thyme, Scotland the Brave, & Loch Lomond, which weave in and out of the other material, all the songs were written and performed by Steve McDonald. As an added bonus, the CD is also an interactive CD-Rom, and includes a music video, story, liner notes and pictures. There is a disclaimer that the technology is new and may not run on all computers, however it does run on Windows 3.1 The long anticipated sequel Stone of Destiny is now out! I am of German and Norwegian stock, not a drop of Scottish blood runs through my veins. That said the best description I can give you for the first time I heard this CD was that of a religious experience. I came close to tears, not of sorrow but of joy for being allowed to experience it. It is filled with passion and soul. It touched me as no other album as ever touched me before. I cannot explain to you with mere words how deeply moved I was by it. Perhaps the following my help. I purchased a second copy is permanently in the #1 slot CD in my 10 CD player in my car. If I were to be told I could only have one CD from my entire collection (600+) I would not hesitate for a moment, Sons of the Somerled would be my choice. Buy it, experience it, revel in it.
